Terhi
Tolvanen
The ‘Woodland’
series, like the earlier work of Terhi, is about the interaction between
man and nature. In her jewellery she focuses not on the damage caused
by man on nature, but on the care and preservation. For instance,
by the removal of dead trees and the pruning of branches, it is possible
for nature to thrive and renew itself. In ‘Woodland’, the
same process happens; from cut branches and shards of wood spring
new life. Terhi calls the mosses, fungi and toadstools that flourish
at the extremities of fallen trees the ‘jewellery’ of
the forest. The mechanical connections and clips of her brooches and
necklaces also refer to human intervention in nature; they determine
the form of the works and contrast with the organic parts. Her own
designed ‘nature’ is combined with branches of birch,
hazel, rosemary, and heather, as well as gemstones such as smoky quartz
and aquamarine. This creates a tension that is evident within each
piece in the series.Terhi’s work is inspired by her love of
the beauty in nature, and its’ strength comes from the necessity
to visualise this beauty.
