Inspiration for my designs comes from urban life and street culture.
I am interested in concrete objects, graffiti and the sites where
I find them. I use Silver as my main material, combining it with
other materials such as rubber and concrete too produce functional
tableware.
I am
interested in people’s pre-conceptions of materials. How silver
is seen as a sign of wealth and status and the notion of concrete
being cheap and shoddy due to the negative stereotyping it suffered
from its use in low-cost buildings in the early sixties.
Function is one of the main considerations of my designs however
I still want them to be challenging. For example a handle should
form part of the object as a whole rather being seemingly separate.
It may not be immediately obvious that a handle is a handle but
with consideration you must appreciate the form works to perform
its function perfectly.
I design
my pieces to evoke curiosity and interest, as well as having a duty
to perform. They should be tactile and user friendly. I design for
a small niche in the market, unique pieces or small quantity batch
production.
